We all have favorite books. Even if you don’t realize it, I’m sure that just by hearing the title you’ve thought of a book. Perhaps yours is a classic or a new modern book that has yet to explode into that beautiful flower you know it to be. My favorite book can easily be put at The Hobbit by Tolkien, the high fantasy that feels truly like it was made for himself and to calm his mind after a long days work . Who knows, but tell me what your favorite book is!
Part of us is constantly nervous. Another part is superbly confident and has so much it wants to do. If you think about it we all have two parts. What we want to do and what we believe to be logical. Sure you know what you’ve got to do while also sitting thinking no I don’t really need that. It would be nice but I don’t need it. That, my friend is where you are wrong. You do need to do this, if it is what will make you happy then it is not a maybe it is a must for your sake. Don’t put your dreams on hold out of fear talk to that person do that thing you’ve always wanted to dO.
But it’s hard, because those two parts of you are at war do and don’t they say, two opposite messages to yourself, you have to push through to the one that you want to hear, follow your dreams and know if you push hard enough it will work.
Today Everyone knows who J. K. Rowling is to at least,t some degree. If you don’t, then it is most likely because you are too young to care about the name on the front of the book. There is no shame in admitting it trust me I was there also, to me her name may as well have been a collection of runes for how little it mattered to me who was on the front cover.
Now I must absolutely confess to you that I haven’t really read the books thoroughly ever.. I would dabble around as much as I could when the latest film came to be, but I never got the full story, it was always the later books, and then there was the issue that is frequently instilled in the problem of “Hey kid! You can’t read that book!” To which I would gasp! Totally confused! “You see,” says the wiser adult that myself, for in this time I was silly sixth-grader! “That book has a reading level of 5.9, and you are supposed to reading much much higher than that!
“So there I was missing the first Harry Potter book because I was too old for it. No big deal, I thought to myself. After all, I had seen the first film. I was aware of the story. I knew about Lord Voldemort and that story, so I just skipped ahead tried two read the biggest more modern books (Modern of course meaning latest.)
J. K. Rowling and Some Retrospection
So I was more of movie bug, and as I grew older, the only two books that were technically in my age range were the half-blood prince and the Deathly Hallows, but you can’t just start an epic tales such as that with the darkest and most complex stories. So essentially I just gave up. I sat there with my popcorn at the theatre and enjoyed them. Alright, cool no worries there. But then as things moved forward,” Despite Rowling saying that she was done with the Wizarding world, she kept going. Adding some interesting tidbits here and there, the most infamous being that Dumbledore was actually gay.
So at first, I was like “Oh my goodness! This is a crazy game changer. But as time marched forward, I found myself wondering why it even matters. My mother and I both recently had a conversation about how, through her reading the books, it never once crossed her mind that maybe Dumbledore was gay. Our conversation basically boiled down to us saying,
“Well he is an exceedingly powerful wizard, must not have not time for dating
-A super nifty quote from a bigger potter head than myself;
Anyways. Who Dumbledore is into isn’t up to me, it’s all good no worries only I do think ere could have been a better way to introduce such a fact partially due to the point of how Dumbledore (cool as he is, check this out. He isn’t the main character and who he’s into isn’t essential. I meanwhile reading when he was with Harry Potter talking about the mirror of Erised, I just couldn’t pick up any hints of that at all. Secondly, it wasn’t necessary for the slightest
Leave the past in the past
For the longest time, I was confused as to why people were so interested in Harry Potter…. Because there were so many things that were being retroactively added like how certain characters were Jewish or how Hogwarts is all-inclusive of all religious views, I’m sure we all could have assumed such things or not. If any of this stuff had been inferred in the text, then that’s fine, but it isn’t. Then she went on to apologize for different events in the series, and I was lost. What makes these books so great? My most recent memories being of her twitter posts.
But I caved my mother and grandmother had always been telling me to read them. I’d put it off. After all, those are kids books. I’m no kid! At the young age of twenty, I finally hit it,” Fuck it,” I said, downloading the audiobook of the first in the series. And beginning my journey narrated by Jim Dale. And I whisked away to that magical world. And over those several hours, I fully understood why this series was so popular.
To put it simply the movies are a bit like frosting. It’s good and will give you a sugar rush, but the books are then full cake it’s rich and moist. There is an amount of flavor that you can’t place but you want more it’s delicious it makes you crave more and more and then final being inside you understand totally why this series is as over as it is. Listen or read. Just do it, no matter what your thoughts on the author. That is why Rowling is so great.
